Karcher K 5.540 X-Series Power Washer Review

One of the Most Powerful Electric Pressure Washers Currently in Production

Having a nice home and a large backyard is awesome, but it also requires a lot of work and maintenance in order to keep it so awesome. Everything gets filthy so easily. If you think cleaning around the house is a chore, just try undertaking a monumental task of cleaning every single spot in your yard. Every time you fire up the grill, you just know that you will have to spend hours just to clean it up afterwards. And God forbid for you to work on your car. Getting those oil and grease stains out of your driveway or garage floor is a nightmare. Or what about cleaning out the gutters, and dead leaves in the fall?

You see, all of these tasks add up to a lot, and they might be manageable if it weren’t for those super-stubborn stains. Trust me, when you’ve tried everything (to no use), it’s time to consider buying a pressure washer. There are plenty of models to choose from, and since they’ve become more compact and more affordable you can perfectly use them for jobs around your home.
Let’s check out the Karcher K 5.540 X-Series Power Washer, an electric washer with 2000PSI and 1.4GPM. Karcher is one of the top brands, so I thought this unit might be worth a look.

Basic Information, Features and Specifications

The Karcher K 5.540 belongs to the manufacturer’s renowned X-series. The motor inside is able to deliver a whopping 2000 PSI of pressurized water and 1.4 GPM. This puts it at the very top of its class as far as sheer power is concerned, those figures provide you with the ability to remove just about any stain or dirt you will come across. Remember your garden hose? This pressure washer delivers about 50 times more power. The motor is not only powerful, but thanks to Karcher’s patented water-cooled induction motor technology, it is durable enough to serve your cleaning needs for years to come.

As far as features are concerned, the Karcher K 5.540 has those in spades, starting with the detergent flow dial which allows you to adjust the amount of detergent the washer will use (depending on how stubborn the stains are). Hooking this washer to your garden hose is extremely simple, everything clicks into place with a light push. As is the case with all pressure washers by Karcher, this one also has the N-Cor Pump, manufactured out of corrosion-free polymer that is self-priming.

Practical Design

As far as design is concerned, the Karcher K 5.540 is a beauty, even though physical appearance shouldn’t be at the top of your list when buying a pressure washer. However, this unit is extremely practical, as it comes with sturdy rolling wheels, which allows you to move it from one location to another without much fuss. This particular unit also comes with an onboard hose reel, which bids farewell to hose getting in the way of your work, or twisting as you move about. The hose itself is 25 feet long which isn’t the longest I have come across, but if necessary you can always buy an extension.

Extra Features

The Karcher K 5.540 comes with two different spray wands which you will use depending on the task at hand. If you need to do some light cleaning or maintenance, I suggest you attach the Vario Power Spray wand. This wand lets you adjust the amount of pressure right there on the wand. In case you really need to do some heavy cleaning, you also get a DirtBlaster wand which provides you with a 50-percent increase in pressure.

Because you are dealing with that kind of power, safety features are a necessity. The Karcher K 5.540 comes with Child Safety Lock, which is a child-proof system that eliminates any chance of accidents happening if your child gets ahold of the pressure washer.

Build Quality

This machine has a lot going for it, but I have some serious concerns about the build quality. The housing is made of plastic that’s not as sturdy as comparable washers, and I’ve seen many complaints about it breaking or poorly connection the parts. What’s more is that there are frequent leaking issues people are experiencing, so much so that I cannot recommend this product anymore. I still believe in Karcher, but not in this particular model.

The Summary

I had high expectations for the Karcher K 5.540 X-Series Pressure Washer, and it has met most of them. What I like about this model is its induction motor, which is not only powerful but also has a longer life than motors on competing pressure washers.

However, the build quality of the rest of this pressure washer seems to be below par, which means that you have little chance of enjoying the long motor life. For this reason I do not recommend this product, but if you still want to check it out you can look for it here on Amazon.
